Welcome to the home base for our 2024 Fic Rec Exchange! This post will house requests, recs, and treats. For full rules, information, timeline, and FAQ, check out our announcement post. To ask questions or request assistance, leave a comment on our help post.

Likes/dislikes: For this particular rec exchange request I am seeking your favorite character studies! Let's dive deep into some psyches. I'm open to reading for literally any fandom — if the fic is readable without any context that's even better, but if you have a primer or other source of info for a fic/fandom that would help me understand what's happening or have more feelings then I'd love that and would gladly read it.
My dislikes in fic tend to revolve around overly tidy emotional resolutions and "therapy speak" from characters who are canonically unlikely to be talking that way. I love mess! I don't mind people learning and growing and earning happy endings, just noting that I particularly appreciate people getting it wrong sometimes and finding happiness anyway. Or not! No happy endings required from me.
Other "likes" aside from just character study include hyperspecific portrayals of locations/topics/jobs that make it clear the author is familiar with them, dramatic reveals or plot twists, stories that center strong friendships, breakups (don't psychoanalyze me), and fun banter!

3-5 fandoms you are requesting recs for: Any fandoms, as long as I can understand it without canon knowledge. For this rec exchange I really love it if they are works I can read as if they are original works, like reading a novel but it's a fic!
Likes: AUs with original/interesting plots (particularly "only fandom could have come up with this" kind of AUs), fantasy/magic/modern with magic AUs (including "we are vampires/werewolves/etc" ones), friends to lovers, genfic about careers/education/growing as a person, places as sentient beings (like “the city is alive” or “the house has a brain of its own” sort of thing), “So and so accidentally joins a coven and gets a found family”, polyamory, happy endings
Dislikes: Characters who are just jerks to each other (I prefer if the ship actually likes each other, not really into ships who snipe and insult each other even if "playful"), sad endings

Likes/dislikes: This is going to sound contradictory but I love character-focused fics (think deep/rich character studies) and plotty/complex fics in equal measure. Give me political scheming! Give me a heist! Give me magical intrigue! But also, quiet character studies that really get into what makes a character tick. I love seeing characters go on quiet journeys of growth/self-love/understanding. Bonus points for strong platonic relationships as part of this equation/an ensemble cast. Romance is a much-loved and wanted part of this equation, but to me it's only a piece of the puzzle that has to come alongside great character work/plotting. When it comes to genre fic/plotty fic, I have a real love for sci-fi/fantasy settings, any sort of AU that involves political scheming (esp in a historical AU), and casefic. Especially the casefic!! I also love AUs set in a very specific setting that it's clear the author put a lot of time/effort/research into depicting with depth. Tonally I love fics that take the emotional stakes seriously but are also a little silly. Fics that make me laugh and cry in equal measure! Also would love more fics about women or that explore queerness (as a culture, as a marginalized identity, etc) more in-depth.
I'm mostly okay with reading anything and will try things even with ships I don't like but as a heads up, I'm not the biggest fan of Cloud/Sephiroth (for FFVII) nor Sakuatsu + Iwaoi (for Haikyuu fic). If there's a really incredible fic that you think I'd love with those ships than by all means go ahead and rec it! These ships are just ones I don't have much interest in/would prefer to avoid if possible, but are not strict DNWs.

Queer Themes and Gender Feelings - i do like genderbends when they include these kinds of things and especially when they involve trans or nonbinary characters. that moment where someone sees something new in someone else for the first time and is taken aback by it. multimedia/nontraditional narrative. stories set in very specific places or take-your-fandom-to-work type AUs. fics that read like a novel - if it’s a fandom i don’t know about, anything that you can immerse yourself in and can be read without too much canon knowledge, and if it’s a fandom i DO know about, i love a good plotty AU or case/mystery fic too!

Likes/dislikes: Happy rec exchange all! This year my request is mostly centered around stories (including non-fic fanworks!) that play with form in ways that break the mold. Give me all your first and second person fics, outsider POVs, non-linear storytelling, media and epistolary fics, creative podfics, unexpected starts or finishes to stories, explorations of themes that get explored through formal choices, etc. Really anything that made you go oh, sweet, I didn't realize you could do that with a fanwork. This includes fanworks for nontraditional fandoms like the ones you'll often see in the Yuletide exchange.
In addition to that request, I'm also always open to whatever your favorite stories are in any fandom! Bring on tropes, character studies, AUs of other media, fix-it fics, any and all of it as long as you're passionate. I am always looking for an unexpected slam dunk!!
My dislikes for this round will include kid fic (sorry!), fics over 150k, infidelity, and rigid AUs with assigned roles that serve as gender proxies (omegaverse, etc). I will gladly make an exception for that last point for trans characters <3 yay <3

Brief Summary: Post-series NHS figures out where to go from here, who she wants to be, and if Jiang Cheng will be a part of that. (TLDR: trans transitioning story where that's not 100% of the focus but very foundational to NHS's story, as well as complicated situationship with Jiang Cheng that feels very real to both characters).
Notes from the reccer: The author is very good at writing complex characters who don't always do the right thing but that makes them feel all the more real. This fic developed NHS in a way that I don't often see, and I feel gives them as happy an ending as they could have had given * gestures at canon *
Warnings: canon-typical references to the war, gender dysphoria and associated issues with how other people perceive their/her gender as they transition (see author's first chapter notes for more details), and some self-destructive ideas that border on suicide but never actually go there.

Notes from the reccer: Alright, so you do not know the canon of Genshin Impact (to my knowledge?) but this fic is such an interesting marriage of convenience that I thought I would rec it since you asked. It is not love between the married couple, but rather, it is a marriage of convenience so that they can (openly, within their circle) date the people they actually want to date in a lavender marriage situation. Since they barely know each other when getting engaged, their own (platonic) relationship also develops delightfully. One of the best parts of it is the character of Sara, as she has to work through a Lot on a way that culminates satisfyingly. There's also tons of political intrigue. It may be hard for you to read without context but if you are interested in context, hit me up! If not, wing it! : )

Brief Summary: An X-Files AU for Stranger Things’ biggest femslash ship.
Note From The Reccer: once again, you said longfic and i Went For It lol. because this is an AU, i think it’s totally readable without canon knowledge (as long as you know that like there’s spooky stuff happening that’s maybe scifi or maybe supernatural), and let me tell you: i devoured this fic. i think it’s a MASTERFULLY done au in the way it pulls from both canons and introduces the new backstory and plot so steadily and comfortably, and it’s just absolutely compulsively readable.
Content Warnings: the author includes some content warnings for individual chapters, so i won’t repeat those here, but definitely believe the archive warning for graphic depictions of violence. all fairly canon typical (def for ST, maybe for XFiles, but i realize that doesn't help if you’re not familiar)

Brief Summary: Shen Yuan doesn't remember writing a 300k PIDW fix-it fic, but he must have, because it's been posted to his AO3 account. (He doesn't remember getting an AO3 account either.)
Note from the Reccer: I love any and all meta takes on this canon, which is itself a transmigration novel and parody of a genre of webnovels that hinges on the main character quite literally taking control of the narrative. This one takes place entirely in the comments section of an AO3 fic (a canon rewrite of the entire book the main character transmigrates into in SVSSS). This fic is iconic to me: so smart, very short but impactful. It may require a rundown of the canon characters depending on your osmosis level, absolutely feel free to hit me up.
Content Warnings: I don't think I have any.
bureaucratic nightmares (series) by 13th_blackbird & anthean
Star Wars, Thrawn/Eli Vanto, 4,434 words total
Brief Summary: Through a serious of messages, we see Thrawn use the Imperial bureaucracy to set in motion a series of events to 1) expose stuff happening on the Star Destroyer he runs that he wants dealt with and 2) get planetside for dates with supply officer Eli Vanto. [NB: This is a point of AU; in canon Eli's Thrawn's right hand man].
Note from the Reccer: This really uses the epistolary format to build out the whole complicated world of a Star Destroyer, mostly in quite funny ways. It's wild how few words it really comprises, and yet you get the sense of the system and a bunch of the people in it. And, of course, some Rube Goldbergian flirting. It's a lot of fun, and you really don't need to know anything about these characters - I have never read a single book with Eli Vanto in it; you can just think of Thrawn as blue Sherlock Holmes (military edition) and Vanto as his Watson, if it helps.

Brief Summary: In canon, Gu Xiang dies. In this fic, we see a kaleidoscope of possibilities for her instead, ranging from Republican era China to a space opera pastiche.
Note from the Reccer: You specifically mentioned second person POV in your request, and I thought of this lovely fic from Your Favorite Fandom (this is a joke, so as with any of these, if you want a primer on characters, please let me know). I have a lot of feelings about it, and also it's just really lyrical and lovely.

Note from the Reccer: This concept sounds wack, but it really really isn't - the fandoms fit so naturally together. It's also, I hope, pretty digestible if you aren't familiar with Jeff Satur's work, though there's a primer here if you want one. I absolutely love how the story unfolds with the wiki format: you can't get a complete version of the story from any one article, but each one fills out more details and perspectives to make it a much fuller story. Also there's so much fun in the details, from the quotes to the trivia sections.
Content Warnings: From the author, "Complicated major character death, horror elements, self-harm for the purpose of powering necromancy, cruelty to undead skeleton constructs disguised as animals." (All pretty Locked Tomb-typical). I would add to these, since you mentioned it in your dislikes, that the Ghost and JS articles feature some infidelity - more for intrigue purposes, and the real betrayal is greater than that - but totally understandable if you do not want to tread there. You can also skip those articles if needed and get the gist of what happened with them without getting the infidelity part.

Notes: It's a fic that dares to ask - what if Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian were betrothed since they were kids? And it turns out the answer is "so many fewer people die!" It's an unusual arranged marriage in that so much of it takes place pre-the marriage, but the betrothal is intense and you still get the usual arc of protectiveness. Lots of political intrigue still in here! A wonderful read of Lan Wangji being annoyed by Wei Wuxian to being so protective of him - very close to canon except he can SAY it in this fic. Because they're betrothed. There's also fun nuance about the Lan sect rules around marriage, which is a brilliant detail.

Notes: The AU of all AUs (characters are so very far removed from their irl personas it might as well be original fiction), the MOST arranged marriage, and the most "trying to explain the changes in your life but they're bonkers." I don't know how you feel about religious trauma being worked through via fic, but this feels like one of those fics. But all the content warnings are Dealt With via the arranged marriage, and also the very clever maneuvering by our main/side characters to ensure everything ends up just like they should is beautiful to watch. Soft power to the extreme. It's an absurd fic, but it's an absurd fic I love and one of my favorite arranged marriage fics of all time (mostly because the dubcon is done So Well).

So it's classic marriage of convenience where they realize they've kind of had a thing for each other for a while and it's So Easy to be married and then the sex is good too. CLASSIC. Plus, there are a bunch of co-parenting scenes!

Notes: My favorite fic of all time, it's a Les Mis modern au (where Enjolras is a DJ who owns a club) where only one character who dies in canon is dead. Has not one but two poly throuples (one of which is a solution to a love triangle), and is incredibly, incredibly found family. It's kind of the point of the fic - turns out Grantaire does have people who love him, and he didn't need to fix himself for them to do that, they just love him. Technically this is the remix to another fic, The People Sing, but it seems like they were conceived together, and they cover very different time spans and scenes. The og deals heavily with Cosette's struggle with her music contract, much less on the full Les Amis, but if you want more of her poly storyline you can read that, too!

Notes: Turning a hockey team into a frat house is a delightful AU idea and it's even better in practice in this fic. It also has a throuple getting together! Or rather, the POV boy deciding he wants to woo his two besties into said throuple and then implementing the plan. As the tags say so elegantly "hijinks & shenanigans" and "comedy of errors" and "the narrator is reliable but he's a moron." It's so good. So so good. And the house is less found family than the other fics, but it's still plenty family in the way that hockey teams (and presumably frats) are.

The relationship exploration and the depiction of a larger queer community is really nicely done and all of the relationships feel dynamic and developed. Since this is focused on two side-characters it has a number of OCs and reads like a novel. I think it’s pretty enjoyable even with no canon knowledge!

Notes: This one is a part of a series but it essentially stands alone - you could totally read it without reading the rest if you want! It's heavy and heartbreaking but hopeful. Incredible study of Sizhui and the Lan Sect and WWX, but at the same time the author does a great job with the plot - it's a case fic that deals a lot with grief and family and I think that it hits that depth of character necessary for a really great post-canon fic. I'd also recommend the rest of this series, but this is definitely my favorite one.

It's really about the trials of being an adult and the character development really shines through - Jeonghan and his journey really influence the whole story, including the romance! Again, a fic that makes you laugh at times but also hurts a little.

I love the found family/ensemble cast so much and I think they really bring the story to life. Tender and lovely and hurts a little.

I love the way Todoroki's other relationships are portrayed too - particularly Bakugou and Aizawa in this one.

Brief Summary: After they split dorms, Hongjoong starts sleeping in Seonghwa's bed from time to time. Neither of them ever mentions it in the light of day.
Notes: The slow burn to end all slow burns. The way this fic handles queerness and being an idol is so lovely. Not to mention the seongjoong... incredibly written mutual pining. The characterization and the emotional beats are particularly striking. They're so human and it's heart-wrenching. This one hurts in the best way and leaves you feeling a little tender.
