[sticky entry] Sticky: What's a Fic Clique?

Fic Clique is a fannish analysis and fic discussion podcast hosted by three long-time fic readers: Nicole, Brenna, and Reid. We upload episodes approximately every other Friday, and a typical episode functions as a book club discussion of three different works of fanfiction from a wide variety of fandoms.

You can listen to Fic Clique wherever you get your podcasts! Our listeners most commonly find us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

In addition to the podcast itself, Fic Clique is a community of enthusiastic fans! We run game nights and yearly events, sometimes appear at fannish conventions, and are always looking for ways to continue connecting with and cultivating our community.

[sticky entry] Sticky: Fic Clique Rec Exchange 2024

Welcome to the home base for our 2024 Fic Rec Exchange! This post will house requests, recs, and treats. For full rules, information, timeline, and FAQ, check out our announcement post. To ask questions or request assistance, leave a comment on our help post.

We are currently in the POSTING PERIOD, which means signups are closed! Those who have signed up, you have until December 23rd to post your recs as a reply to your claim on this post. See below for formatting recommendations, though you have freedom to add or streamline as you'd prefer.

If you’d rather just give a treat (a one-off recommendation of any kind of fanwork) with no commitment, come back and join us from November 23rd to December 29th!

When posting a claim, please be sure to include
  • 3-5 completed fics for the fandoms requested, if there were any (your recs can all be for the same fandom, or split up between the requests) + any wildcard recs you'd like to add
  • Links to the fics you are recommending
  • Content warnings for each fic, where relevant
  • Length and rating for each fic
  • Reccer notes: why are you recommending this fic? What made you think your recipient would like it?
The reccing period will remain open until 12/23 — if you know you're running late, please comment under your claim and let your recipient know when you'll have the recommendations ready by. All posting closes on 12/29, when this post becomes an archive and commenting will be disabled.

If you'd like to post a one-off treat, title your comment [TREAT] Name of Fandom, and post a recommendation under the thread for the request by 12/29. You can post a treat even if you did not sign up for the event.

Thanks so much for joining us and happy reccing! <3

I Need a Slow Burn STAT: The Pitt Fanfiction Recs

Welcome! As promised, this reclist functions as a bonus material alongside our two most recently released episodes at the time of posting: Nic & Brenna's not-so-mini minisode all about the Pitt fandom, and our regular all-host ep about reclists and reccing culture in fandom

Below you will find a smattering of very fun multi-ship fics Host Nic discovered and enjoyed while surveying the fic landscape on AO3 for this relatively new and frankly thriving fandom. There should be something for everyone here — additionally, please leave a comment if you'd like to recommend a fic that's not on here!

don't call it a comeback by overnights — Mohan/Santos, rated E — Samira is invited to a wine party at the Santos&Whitaker apartment and reveals a little too much about her disappointing sex life during a drinking game. Trinity is appalled and offers to help rectify that. This fic has some of the best Samira characterization (particularly in her dialogue) that I've seen in the fandom and it's so much fun.

method actor by pulses — Santos & Whitaker, Santos/Garcia, rated T — Trinity Santos character study that dives into her personal history, the things that activate her, and the desire she has to both protect others and to be protected herself. Beautiful and concise!

and yet i fight, and yet i fight by a_gathering_of_flowers — Santos & Langdon, unrated — alternate ending to S1 where Langdon's wife kicks him out and Trinity accidentally offers him her spare room. They become roommates. This fic goes deep into all the delicious (platonic!) tension between them and forces them to confront it head-on. One of my personal favorites in the whole fandom.

and i never minded being on my own by doreensladle — Santos/Garcia, rated M — Trinity gets hurt while she and Garcia are ambiguously on a date. They have to head to the ER, and Trinity learns what it's like for someone to care and stay by her side. Really sweet without tipping into saccharine territory. Made me root for these two!

the road is longer than it is hard by a_gathering_of_flowers — Langdon/Abby, Langdon & Robby, unrated — Langdon gets hit by a car on the way to work and ends up admitted to the hospital as a patient. Abby shows up and is an iconic bisexual punk queen. Loved this rendering of their marriage, and this author just understands Langdon on a fundamental level.

truth puts its shoes on by orphan_account — Mel/Langdon, rated M — Langdon goes with Mel to meet up with Mel's mom. That relationship, which was already strained, buckles under the attention of an outsider. Really beautiful character study of Mel and exploration into why her family is the way that it is.

2:00 AM by orphan_account — Mel/Langdon, rated T — Langdon needs a place to crash and Mel gives him one. This is one of the iconic Mel/Langdon fics and its popularity (11k kudos!) reflects how many people resonated with this take on their dynamic! A lot of fic for this ship is either pre-slash or slow-burn and I think that lends itself so well to their dynamic and what we see of them in the show.

the fifth element by copycat_punisher — Mel/Langdon, rated T — another pre-slash fic where the whole Pitt crew heads to karaoke and Mel and Langdon bail early. Pitch perfect voices across the board, and really goes for the "found family" vibes the show invites through its format. + incredibly fun, snappy dialogue. (This one also has an equally delightful sequel)

new dog old tricks by overnights — McKay/Javadi, rated E — Javadi sees McKay across the bar at a lesbian dive. A lot of mind games, sexy evasion, and actual sex ensue. A lot of people were really taken by this mentor/mentee relationship in s1, and if you like your yuri a little toxic and enjoy an age gap I think this fic will be for you.

A Case of the Mondays by skilift — Robby/Whitaker, rated E — Dennis Whitaker's bad luck continues in this fic where Chekhov's stab wound comes for him and he ends up in the care of the hospital, including a very attentive Dr. Robby. Classic whump --> hurt/comfort --> getting together fic.

I hope these serve as a starter pack for your Pitt!fic needs! Many are at or below 10k and highly economical with their language in a way that's always going to hit for me. Share a comment here or elsewhere if you enjoyed and would like to see more reclists from us (or other longer form content) on dreamwidth. <3

2024 Fic Clique Rec Exchange: Event info, Timeline, and FAQ

Header for the Fic Clique Holiday Rec exchange

Hello! It’s that time of year again - Fic Clique Rec Exchange! This might have snuck up on you just like it’s snuck up on us. So, this year we are doing things slightly differently! This will be a slightly more casual Rec Exchange than in years past, but it will still embody the true spirit and joy of gifting fic recs.

Please note: Due to the nature of this event and the fact that explicit fics may be part of the exchange, you must be 18+ to participate.

We will be hosting the Rec Exchange this year here on our new Fic Clique Dreamwidth page! [confetti] You will comment on the sign-up post with your request (instead of submitting via gdoc like years past). After the sign-up period has been completed, there will be a claims period in which everyone will have a free for all to claim who they’d like to rec for! You will claim by commenting “Claimed!” on the post you’d like to rec for.

** Please claim using the anon posting option! **

(More info on signups and claims, including formatting help and examples, will be available once those open!)

If you have signed up, you will also need to claim someone to rec for. You can claim up to three (3) people to rec for. This does mean that people may have more than one person reccing for them. Just like you can claim up to three people to rec for, each sign-up can only have three claims and will be capped and closed at three.

We are also doing informal rec “treats” this year - you can add one “treat” rec to any sign-up regardless of whether you claimed their request during claims.

Instead of everyone receiving their recs via email as in years past, recs will be posted by the rec-er on the sign-up they claimed in the Dreamwidth community. There will be a longer posting period - so if you do not see recs on the first day, please do not despair! It is the holidays and we want to give people time.

When signing up please post using the following format:

Name:
3-5 fandoms you are requesting recs for*:
Likes/dislikes:
DNW:
AO3 or any other social media you would like to share with your reccer (not required):
Are you open to a “wild card” rec that does not fit your requested fandoms:

*This year you can ALSO request a general vibe of fics you want without a specific fandom. This can be instead of your fandoms OR in addition to. E.g. “Give me all the fake dating fics! I don’t care about fandom as long as I can read it with no knowledge”.

Timeline:

Nov 8th: Sign ups open

Nov 22nd: Sign ups close (at midnight PST)

Nov 23rd - Dec 13th: Claims period

Dec 14th: Posting opens

Dec 23rd: Official posting closes - posting still open for pinch-hitting and treats

Dec 29th: All posting closes

Jan 3rd: Complete doc of all the recs will be available

FAQ:

Q: Can I request any fandom?

A: Yes. You can request any fandom under the sun - however please keep in mind that it is smart Rec Exchange practice to request at least one bigger fandom, to make it more likely that people will have recs to offer you.

Q: Is this exchange anonymous?

A: Yes & no. Your sign-up is not anonymous in that you will need to use a name to sign-up (this obviously can be an internet username or pseudonym). Claims will be anonymous. However, when you post your recs, you will also need to put your name.

Q: How do drop outs work?

A: We have a fairly informal drop out process. Since we are doing sign-ups differently this year, please just email us if you need to drop out and let us know who you were reccing for so we can help fill in or find a pinch hitter.

Q: How do I get in touch with you?

A: The easiest ways are to either shoot us an email at ficcliquepod@gmail.com, DM one of us on Discord (join the server here!), or leave a comment on our Rec Exchange Help post.
